Hidden Ohio Treasure: Babe Ruth Cards Hit Auction Home Run

In a twist that might make the most seasoned of collectors green with envy, a family in Northeast Ohio stumbled upon what can only be described as a modern-day treasure trove: a dusty cigar box filled to the brim with priceless baseball Americana. Despite its humble appearance, this box wasn’t just a forgotten keepsake container; it was a veritable vault of history that carried some of baseball’s most revered figures, prominently featuring the legendary Babe Ruth.

The siblings, who have chosen to remain incognito and presumably chuckling all the way to the bank, discovered this cache while methodically going through the belongings of their late parents. Auctioneer Jack Kiko from Stark County’s Kiko Auctions explained that the family entertained a notion that these cards were valuable—and boy, were they right on the money.

The auction commenced on May 28, wrapping up on June 2, with the Canton Repository putting on its analyst hat to offer numbers as crunchy as peanuts at the ballpark. The event featured a whopping 623 lots, and it turns out the majority were vintage baseball cards—a treasure map rolled into colorfully packaged cardboard.

Topping the list of treasures was the remarkable assortment from the 1933 Goudey Big League Gum set, a series still celebrated in the card-collecting cosmos. These weren’t just cards; they were mint-flavored time capsules, originally marketed with the then-revolutionary concept of including a gum stick in the packs—a clever ploy that made these cards as sticky as the gum itself and just as beloved. The set is rich with immortals of the diamond, ensuring its top spot on many collectors’ wish lists.

As the auctioneer’s virtual gavel echoed around the cybersphere, bidders racked up an impressive $120,699. Adding the digital-age markup—a 10% internet premium—and a 6.5% sales tax, the final tab exceeded a cool $140,000.

Amidst this frenetic online action, one particularly savvy bidder—identity shrouded in mystique thanks to a cryptic user ID—nabbed a sizeable share of the collection. Imaginations ran wild and bids soared through the virtual roof, especially for a crowning piece: a 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth card with a bold red backdrop, which alone fetched $8,000. Collectively, five different Ruth cards clinched a tidy sum of $35,250, taxes and fees aside.

The condition of these cards varied somewhat, and rather intriguingly, none had made it through the hands of professional graders. This aspect adds a thrilling layer of speculation and risk, akin to a well-struck fly ball that refuses to be caught until it lands in fortunate hands. For collectors, that’s half the allure of dabbling with such cherished fragments of the past—they’re as much a game of fortune as they are passion.

In their journey from a humble attic in Ohio to commanding attention on screens worldwide, these vintage gems reaffirm the enduring allure of America’s pastime. Each card ignites a profound sense of nostalgia, redefining even the simplest family discovery into a monumental event for collectors and fans alike. It’s a reminder that beneath layers of dust, and perhaps a lifetime of memories, even the most unassuming spaces can harbor history waiting to rewrite its value.

This exciting auction has served as a testament to the enduring magic of baseball history, stitched together in vivid hues and nostalgia-infused tales of days gone by. So, as America barrels into another season of swinging, pitching, and dreaming of the home run that sails over the fences, it stands affirmed that stories such as these will continue to captivate and inspire, immortalized in the timeless allure of collectible cardboard.
