NFL Playoffs Propel Rookie Cards of Top Quarterbacks to New Heights

The 2023-24 NFL playoffs have brought a surge of excitement to both the field and the world of sports memorabilia. Among the players creating a buzz are four impressive quarterbacks: Patrick Mahomes II, Brock Purdy, Lamar Jackson, and Jared Goff. As these quarterbacks battle it out on the field, collectors and enthusiasts are driving up the value of their rare rookie cards in online auctions.

The AFC Championship game sets the stage for an epic clash between Patrick Mahomes, a two-time Super Bowl champion, and Lamar Jackson, the frontrunner for the 2023 NFL MVP award. On the other hand, the NFC championship features a showdown between Brock Purdy and Jared Goff, both ranking highly in passing yards and touchdowns.

While these quarterbacks showcase their skills on the field, their rookie cards are attracting significant attention in the world of sports collectibles. The online marketplace, eBay, has seen a flurry of bidding activity in January. Notable items include a 2017 autographed Panini National Treasures Black card of Patrick Mahomes, which sold for an impressive $19,300 after 62 bids. Another sought-after Mahomes item, a 2017 signed Panini Contenders Rookie Ticket card graded BGS 9.5, fetched a remarkable $16,577 from 51 bids.

Brock Purdy, a second-year sensation from San Francisco, is also making waves in the rookie card market. His 2022 Playoff Contenders signed Rookie Ticket “Cracked Ice” variation, graded PSA 10 and limited to only 22 copies, sold for an impressive $10,268 on 27 bids. This follows a trend of Purdy’s rookie cards consistently selling for over $10,000, such as a 2022 National Treasures signed patch card graded PSA 9, which garnered an astounding $15,000 on 53 bids.

Lamar Jackson’s rookie cards have also seen significant auction activity. A Gem-Mint 2018 Panini Prizm Black Finite card of Lamar Jackson fetched an impressive $51,100 after receiving 76 bids. Another highly sought-after Jackson item, a 2018 National Treasures autographed patch card numbered #27/99 and graded BGS 9.5, generated considerable interest and sold for $18,000 on 39 bids.

Despite a mixed start with the Rams and subsequent improvement with the Lions, Jared Goff’s rookie cards are experiencing a surge in interest. A 2019 Panini Absolute Kaboom! card, a limited gold variation marked #6/10, received 50 bids and was sold for $3,049. Additionally, a 2016 Donruss Optic Gold Prizm rookie card, graded BGS 10 and bearing the rare #2/10 mark, fetched $2,950 after 32 bids.

As the NFL playoffs progress and the anticipation builds, the excitement is mirrored in the sports memorabilia market. The value and desirability of these top quarterbacks’ rookie cards continue to rise, attracting collectors and enthusiasts who recognize the historical importance and potential investment value associated with these items. With each game, the stakes get higher, reflecting the growing interest and demand for these coveted cards.
