Shohei Ohtani’s Record Card Sale and Robert Kraft’s Purchase at ‘Holy Grails’ Auction

On a bustling Tuesday night in Harlem, the “Holy Grails” auction made headlines as Shohei Ohtani’s rookie card stole the show, breaking records and reaching an astonishing final bid of $336,000. The auction, a unique collaboration between Fanatics Collect and Sotheby’s, showcased a lineup of legendary sports memorabilia that left collectors and enthusiasts in awe.

The star of the evening was undoubtedly the one-of-a-kind 2018 Topps Chrome Sapphire Autographs Superfractor rookie card of Shohei Ohtani. This exceptional piece shattered previous auction records, surpassing the $312,000 mark set in December 2021. The astounding rise in value of Ohtani’s card from $4,800 in May 2019 to its recent six-figure sale is a testament to the Japanese sensation’s remarkable achievements on the baseball field.

Sotheby’s had initially estimated the card’s value to range between $80,000 and $120,000, but Ohtani’s historic season, where he became the first MLB player to achieve 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season, fueled a bidding frenzy that far exceeded expectations. Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s head of collectibles, expressed his admiration for the Ohtani card, highlighting its significance by featuring it as the opening lot of the auction.

Among the distinguished attendees at the event were renowned figures such as NFL icon Tom Brady, who made waves by sitting alongside New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft in the front row. Kraft, in a momentous gesture, secured a piece of history by acquiring a Tom Brady 2000 Playoff Contenders Rookie Ticket Autograph card for $120,000, adding to the allure of the night.

The auction showcased other notable sales, including a 2022 Bowman Chrome 1st Bowman Prospect Autograph Superfractor card of rising MLB talent Elly De La Cruz, fetching an impressive $360,000, surpassing Ohtani’s record-breaking sale. However, the pinnacle of the night was the sale of a 2005-06 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection Dual Logoman Autographs card featuring basketball legends Michael Jordan and Julius Erving. This extraordinary card, adorned with game-used NBA logo patches from the players’ jerseys, commanded a staggering bid of $780,000, captivating the audience with its rarity and historical significance.

The “Holy Grails” auction brought together a collection of the rarest and most coveted sports memorabilia, making it a must-attend event for collectors and enthusiasts alike. With Shohei Ohtani’s card setting the stage for a night filled with remarkable bids and iconic items, the auction solidified its status as a premier destination for acquiring pieces of sports history that transcend mere collectibles.
