Rare Signed Photo of Ruth and Gehrig by Arthur Hull Goes Up for Auction

In the realm of baseball memorabilia, some items hold extraordinary significance due to their historical importance and the stories they represent. An exceptional discovery has recently come to light: a photograph of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, signed by the iconic duo and verified as an original Type 1 piece, capturing a poignant moment during the Yankees’ spring training camp between 1927 and 1931. Arthur Hull, a renowned photographer known for his work with The New York Times and The Associated Press, beautifully captured the essence of these two baseball legends in a relaxed setting.

The photograph showcases the camaraderie and joy shared between Ruth and Gehrig, and their autographs reflect both Hull’s dedication to his craft and the subjects’ care. Keith Breitweiser, an acquisitions specialist at Lelands, which is handling the auction, emphasizes the exceptional quality of the autographs and the photograph itself: “These are the two most iconic players who ever played the game on the most iconic team. The autographs are some of the nicest you’ll find.”

The journey of this photograph to the auction block is a tale of historical preservation and serendipity. After Hull’s passing in 1969, Karl Allison and a friend acquired his collection, which included this signed photograph, from Hull’s widow for a nominal sum. The acquisition consisted of a treasure trove of negatives and photographs spanning Hull’s impressive five-decade career. Among these treasures was the signed photograph of Ruth and Gehrig, which Allison chose to safeguard by storing it away from light while creating a duplicate for display purposes.

This photograph goes beyond its visual beauty, representing a rare chance to own a piece of sporting history. Signed photographs of Ruth and Gehrig, especially those validated as original Type 1 pieces and in superb condition, are extraordinarily scarce and ardently sought after by collectors. Consequently, the upcoming auction starting on February 25 is expected to generate significant interest from both collectors and enthusiasts, providing a unique opportunity to acquire a tangible artifact from baseball’s illustrious past.

This imminent auction not only emphasizes the enduring allure of Ruth and Gehrig, but also highlights the importance of meticulous preservation and the role of photography in capturing and commemorating the legends of the sport. As this photograph prepares to find a new home, it continues to celebrate the legacy of two of baseball’s most revered figures. Immortalized by Arthur Hull’s lens and preserved throughout the decades, this photograph stands as a testimony to their monumental impact on the game and American culture as a whole.
