Rare Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth Cards Shine at Heritage Auction

In the electric atmosphere of the recent Heritage Spring Sports Card Auction, collectors and enthusiasts alike were treated to a spectacle of rare and highly sought-after sports memorabilia, with the captivating charm of vintage cards stealing the spotlight.

The star of the show was the rare T206 Ty Cobb card, distinguished by its connection to Cobb’s tobacco brand and a distinctive advertisement back that fetched a staggering $432,000 at the auction. The card’s allure lies not only in its association with the legendary baseball player but also in its scarcity, with only around 25 known to exist. The back of the card proudly declares Cobb as the “King of the Smoking Tobacco World,” adding to its uniqueness within the T206 set. Its glossy finish serves as a testament to its origins with a now-defunct tobacco product, making it a true gem for collectors.

Not to be outdone, the sought-after M101-5 Sporting News Blank Back Babe Ruth rookie card also made waves at the auction, commanding an impressive price of $348,000. The card’s significance in baseball history and its rarity as the lone PSA 4 graded card from the series further underscored the enduring appeal and value of vintage sports memorabilia.

Among the other notable highlights were the sale of a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card, fetching $204,000, and a 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card, which sold for $210,000. The auction drew in over 2,450 bidders from around the globe, propelling the total sales to over $10 million and emphasizing the widespread interest in collectible sports cards.

One of the standout sales was the auction of one of the three PSA 10 graded 1969 Topps Nolan Ryan rookie cards, which garnered $180,000. Chris Ivy, the Director of Sports Auctions at Heritage, highlighted the auction’s broad appeal, showcasing high-profile cards alongside significant gains for cards previously valued in the four-figure range.

An intriguing addition to the auction was the sale of a signed 1951 Bowman Willie Mays rookie card, notable for its rarity with only 31 signed copies known to exist. The card’s backstory and its impressive sale price of $126,000 added an extra layer of excitement for collectors. The interest in unopened materials was also evident, with a 1967 Topps Football cello box and a 1970 Topps baseball (Mixed Series) cello box each fetching $81,000. Furthermore, a ticket stub from Jackie Robinson’s UCLA football debut surpassed expectations, selling for $22,800.

A highlight of the auction was the discovery of eight 1914 Lawrence Semon issue postcards, featuring Ty Cobb, which turned a modest $400 investment into an astonishing $50,370 windfall, showcasing the potential for remarkable finds in the vintage card market.
