Arturs Silovs: A Rising Star in Upper Deck Series 2 Young Guns

The thrilling allure of the Upper Deck Series 2 Young Guns cards has captured the hearts of hockey card collectors across the globe. While the spotlight often shines on prominent players like Connor Bedard, a new star has emerged in the form of Arturs Silovs. Originally positioned third in the goaltending depth chart for the Vancouver Canucks, Silovs’s unexpected ascent in the Stanley Cup playoffs has left fans and collectors in awe.

Silovs’s journey to fame took an unexpected turn when injuries sidelined key goaltenders Thatcher Demko and Casey deSmith, paving the way for his meteoric rise. Once considered destined for more time in the AHL, Silovs found himself thrust into the spotlight, transitioning from a relatively unknown figure to a standout performer on the ice.

When faced with the formidable Nashville Predators, many anticipated Silovs would struggle to hold his own. However, the young goaltender defied all odds, surpassing expectations with remarkable performances, including a standout game where he made an impressive 42 saves—a feat matched by only two other Canucks goalies in away playoff games. Despite the eventual defeat by the Oilers in Game 6, Silovs’s exceptional performance was undeniable, with the team’s struggles extending beyond his efforts.

Prior to his remarkable NHL debut, Silovs had already begun making a name for himself in junior hockey with the Barrie Colts and on the international stage with HS Riga in Latvia. Despite flying under the radar of scouting reports, his talent shone through, leading to his selection by Vancouver in the sixth round of the 2019 NHL Draft. Notable performances at the World U18 Championships and the 2023 IIHF World Championships, where he played a pivotal role in securing a historic bronze medal for Latvia, solidified his reputation as a rising star in the hockey world.

The burgeoning interest in Silovs extends beyond his on-ice heroics to the realm of hockey card collecting. His rookie cards, particularly the coveted Young Guns and Canvas Young Guns variants from the Upper Deck Series 2, have garnered significant attention and value among collectors. A recent highlight includes the sale of a Young Guns Red Outburst variant for an impressive $263, further solidifying his status as a sought-after collectible. His presence in various Upper Deck releases, as well as non-licensed BY cards from IIHF tournaments, has expanded his appeal, particularly among fans in Europe.

As Silovs continues to shine in the NHL, the Canucks face important decisions regarding his future role, whether as a backup to Demko or potentially as a valuable trade asset. What remains certain is that Silovs’s unexpected rise has not only elevated him to a key player for Vancouver but also turned him into a beloved figure in the world of hockey card collecting. A star on the rise, Arturs Silovs’s journey from obscurity to fame is a testament to the enduring allure of the unexpected in the world of sports.
