Columbia City Parks Superintendent Embezzles $240K

Mark Green, the former superintendent of Columbia City Parks and Recreation, recently found himself at the center of controversy as he faced the consequences of his illicit actions. Sentenced to three years for defrauding the city and misappropriating over $240,000 in public funds, Green’s downfall began with a trail of financial irregularities that ultimately led to his termination.

The unfortunate saga unfolded when Columbia City Mayor Ryan Daniel initiated an investigation after noticing suspicious financial transactions in March 2023. Working in conjunction with the Whitley County Prosecutor’s Office, Indiana State Police, and the Indiana State Board of Accounts, the probe delved into Green’s activities, unraveling a tale of deception and misuse of resources within the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.

Court documents revealed startling revelations about Green’s misdeeds – he had splurged a staggering $246,000 on baseball cards from ‘Sport Spot,’ using the city’s credit card for personal indulgence. In a misguided attempt to sustain his questionable hobby, Green resorted to selling some of the purchased cards on eBay. Eventually, the truth came to light, and Green admitted to wrongfully channeling the city’s funds towards his private collection of baseball memorabilia.

Initially facing a plethora of charges including corrupt business influence, theft, and official misconduct, Green opted to plead guilty to one count of theft in April 2024, under a negotiated settlement. The plea deal, while sparing him from a more severe legal reckoning, mandated Green to make reparations amounting to $275,628. This restitution comprised payments of $100,000 to a bond company and the remaining $175,628 to the city coffers, seeking to rectify the financial damage inflicted by his actions.

On the day of reckoning, Monday saw Green being handed a three-year sentence, with the stipulation that he would potentially spend the first year behind bars or on work release, followed by two years of probation. As the gavel fell, Green’s sentence marked the culmination of a dramatic and cautionary tale of misconduct and its consequences within the realm of public service.

The aftermath of Green’s misappropriation has cast a shadow over the management and oversight of Columbia City’s Parks and Recreation Department, exposing glaring loopholes in financial controls. The episode serves as a stark reminder of the crucial need for vigilance and accountability in the custodianship of public resources, prompting calls for stringent measures to prevent such egregious malfeasance in the future.
