Rare Sports Memorabilia at Freeman’s/Hindman Auction

Freeman’s/Hindman is currently hosting an electrifying sports memorabilia auction that is capturing the attention of enthusiasts and collectors alike. The star attraction of the event is a complete set of 1984-85 Star Company basketball cards, still in their original team bags from decades ago. Among these prized possessions is an iconic Michael Jordan rookie card, poised to fetch a staggering $50,000 to $70,000 due to its rarity and the enduring popularity of Jordan in the collectibles market.

The 1980s marked a pivotal moment for trading cards when the Star Company boldly secured the NBA’s rights after Topps chose not to renew its contract. Their decision to distribute cards mainly through mail orders and select outlets made these cards scarce, with few remaining in their original packaging, adding to their allure and value in the market.

While the basketball cards steal the spotlight, the auction also features exceptional pieces from baseball history, including three autographed baseballs signed by the legendary Babe Ruth. One notable piece is the mini baseball with Ruth’s signature boldly preserved on the sweet spot—a testament to Ruth’s enduring legacy and a coveted item for historical sports collectors.

In addition to the Michael Jordan cards, the auction presents a dazzling array of vintage cards and memorabilia. Noteworthy items include a signed baseball from the 1955 Baseball Hall of Fame induction weekend, carrying signatures from 19 luminaries like Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Cochrane, a single-signed Jimmie Foxx ball, and a Ty Cobb signed and inscribed ball from 1959.

For vintage card enthusiasts, the auction features a rare 1968 O-Pee-Chee Nolan Ryan rookie card graded PSA 8 and a near complete set of 1952 Topps baseball cards boasting over 60 high numbers. Multiple Mickey Mantle cards from the 1950s and 60s add to the allure, attracting collectors keen on iconic sports figures of that era.

Adding to the auction’s appeal are standout items such as a San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl XXIV Champions ring, a 1926 New York Yankees multi-signed baseball with autographs from Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, and a collection of 1920s-30s St. Louis Cardinals contract agreements signed by Branch Rickey.

Running until June 13 on Freeman’s/Hindman’s website, this auction not only showcases the historical richness encapsulated in these collectibles but also offers sports enthusiasts and collectors a chance to acquire a piece of that illustrious heritage. From basketball to baseball and the broader spectrum of American sports history, this auction caters to a wide range of collector interests, promising something extraordinary for everyone passionate about sporting memorabilia.
