Vintage Sports Card Sales Hit Record High at REA Auction

Robert Edward Auctions (REA) swung for the fences and hit a home run with its recent February auction, hauling in an impressive total of over $1.2 million in sales. The star of the show was a PSA 5 graded M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner card, which fetched a whopping $75,000, setting a new benchmark for its version at the auction house. This sale not only spotlighted the enduring appeal of vintage sports cards but also showcased the insatiable demand for rare gems in the collectibles market.

But the Wagner card was not the only ace up REA’s sleeve during this auction. A Ty Cobb Blue Background card from the same M116 series, graded PSA GOOD 2, also made waves by shattering the record for its condition with a sale price of $15,000. The event drew in a crowd of passionate registry builders and collectors, who eagerly battled it out for treasures like the ten Mint 9 graded cards from the 196 Topps set. Among these, the #2 Roman Mejias PSA MINT 9 card stole the spotlight, commanding an impressive auction high of $19,200 – a feat that highlights the allure of non-Hall of Famer cards in top-notch condition.

Offering a smorgasbord of 2,732 items for bidding, REA catered to a wide range of tastes with its diverse selection of collectibles. Some of the other notable sales include a 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background card, graded PSA VG-EX 4, which fetched $21,000. A 1934 R320 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig card, graded PSA EX-MT 6, also made headlines with a sale price of $18,000. Additionally, a complete set of 1986-1987 Fleer Basketball cards, graded PSA NM-MT 8, changed hands for a cool $12,000 – showcasing the enduring popularity of basketball memorabilia among collectors.

Brian Dwyer, the President of REA, expressed delight at the enthusiastic response from the collector community and hinted at more excitement to come in the upcoming March and Spring Auctions. With an eye on the future, Dwyer teased potential attractions that are sure to dazzle both seasoned collectors and new enthusiasts, cementing REA’s status as a premier destination for sports collectibles.

The success of this recent auction not only underscores the timeless allure and investment value of vintage sports cards and memorabilia but also sets the stage for even more thrilling events on the horizon. As collectors eagerly await the next chance to add rare gems to their collections, REA remains at the forefront of the sports collectibles market, promising a treasure trove of opportunities in the upcoming Encore event and Spring Catalog Auction. It’s game on for collectors and enthusiasts alike, as the excitement continues to build in the world of sports card auctions.
